Hey all we are trying to make the site easy to use again. Some things are going on around PBP. First we have just put a killer comp called SPEED TRIALS:WORST BANDS OF WEST MICHIGAN. This comp has 17 bands from all over west Michigan. It’s a one sided 12″ record with a screen printed b side. Check out the review from MRR this month.

This is what punk is all about folks. This comp was recorded in one day last Feb. at the suicide house in Grand Rapids MI and the recording quality is really good. Seventeen bands,one house,one day wtf…..I am willing to bet that any of these bands are great to see live. This comp runs the gamut of straight ahead USHC to grind to crusty ’90s influenced HC and beyond. The variety of punk influences on this comp is pretty amazing and while this may sound like a nightmare for some it works on this record. Since pretty much every song on here is good. The standout tracks are SHATTERED BADGE.APOSTACY,ATTENTION SPAN,SCABBURGER,POSITIVE NOISE,HEGEMONICIDE,SKELETON PARTY,THE REAL BITTERS,DISSERTION, no rock stars by BUNNY SKULLS and XTRA VOMIT. I am willing to bet any of these bands are great to see live. This is a one sided LP with a screen printed b side of the state in skull form on red vinyl. Cool reused spray painted and screen printed cover. Comes with a 8.5 x 11 with one band a page. I guess shitty pixilated art is aesthetic these days. I prefer the cut and paste stuff in here. Xtra praise to XTRA VOMIT for their page about their song “manhandled” and the loads of info they took the time to get together. The only prob we have is the band order and the booklet don’t exactly match. It’s only a few pages, but anyone unfamiliar with these bands will have a hard time finding out who’s who by the end of the record. I have to insist that all songs on these need to be heard because no matter what my personal punk tastes may be our yours, this comp is what i hope is going on in all scenes across the U.S. and world. The intro of this booklet says “what you are holding is a piece of history” and while I hate statements like that, they follow it with an earnest call to punks to support their local scene. That and all the music on this comp have me agreeing. (MB)

Ok so i have been slow with updating this site as of late. I have alot of things going on, but I will start updating this all the time now. DRAIZE from Boston will be doing a record on PUNKS BEFORE PROFITS this summer. Its in the pressing right now. The release show will be in August in Boston. OILEY MENACE will be doing a show with them. They are new Lansing MI grinding hardcore band. This band is one the best bands i have seen in a long time. You can check the release section to order their mind blowing demo. I hope to work with them also in the future.

BUNNY SKULLS-18 Song EP (Punks Before Profits, 7″ EP)

Formerly a duo, now a trio and I neglected to review their first 7″. Distored, raw hardcore in short, sharp installments. I mean, you’re not going to find any three minute epics here. It’s not all blinding thrash either. “Daily War” actually has something of a melody. Pretty tongue-in-cheek and particularly contemptuous of crusties, suicide punx, youth crew-ers and people who wear Hooters shirts. What’s funny is this sounds like it was recorded on a boombox or four-track but it was actually recorded by Steve Albini at his studio. And he does a great job of making it sound like a boombox recording. I just went back and listened to their first, one-sided EP and that was recorded on a four-track and is sonically similar. RAMMING SPEED-Always Disgusted, Never Surprised (Punks Before Profits, 7″ EP)

Boston’s metallic hellions Ramming Speed are back with four new tracks. The main muse is straight-up thrash metal with some blowtorch leads. That’s particularly true for “Too Close To Almost,” the best song here and almost close to catchy (sorry). Given to blasting on occasional and Jonah Livingston has the sticksmanship to pull it off but they’re at their best when sticking to the traditional trappings. The lyrics deal with economic collapse and putting too much faith in political leaders i.e. the current occupant of the White House to make things better for the underclass (“No Hope”). RELIGIOUS SS DISORDER-Prey (Punks Before Profit, 7″ EP)

Dark and churning punk with tribal-like rhythms, buzzing guitar and bass, plus vocals with a whole lotta reverb on them. The title track begins with collage of clips repeating the word “terrorism” ad infinitum leading into the musical fray. The more aggressive punk side comes up for “Critically Think” and “People Not Property,” but there are other times where there’s an anarcho punk vibe and that adds a distinctive flair. I give a short history of all that is played and this will also be come a pro done tape done in a very low amount so keep your eyes open for that. STATE record is out in just a couple weeks. They just put out a vol. 2 of the german eps that THE STATE is doing. This one has 4 new rippers and is out on STATEMENT records.

BACK FROM TOUR

Ok just got back from two tours. One with RELIGIOUS SS DISORDER and THE AMOEBAS. We did a tour out west which ruled for sure. Then POSITIVE NOISE and CRUCIAL CAUSE did the east coast which also ruled. All the people who helped with either of these tours thank you very much. I have to say after these tours i feel hardcore punk is on the up side. I seen alot of cool bands and meant alot of cool new people helping keep hardcore punk alive. I am doing alot of catching up with PBP these days so keep checking back. RAMMING SPEED record is out and THE STATE 7″ is in pressing the tests have been giving the ok so expect that in about 3 weeks or so. CULU from the midwest are coming to MIchigan to record a 7″ for PBP should be awesome. This will be Oct. 3rd along with recording they will be playing THE STATE record release show at 410 webster street in Grand Rapids MI. POSITIVE NOISE and EXTRA VOMIT will be doing a split 7″. PN has there side just about done and EXTRA VOMIT will be hitting the studio very soon. Some cool things coming up so keep checking back.

Alot of shit happening around PBP these days. Ok BUNNY SKULLS new 18 song ep is out. Total midwest hardcore think of bands like THE FIX and STATE and you get a picture of whats going on. RAMMING SPEED tests coming this week then i will put up some info on preorders. RELIGIOUS SS DISORDER has a new 7″ out any day. There has been some probs with the pressing plant and with the cover, but soon this will be out. STATE just recorded a new ep over the weekend so expect that out in august when POSITIVE NOISE and STATE play NYC area. POSITIVE NOISE and CRUCIAL CAUSE will be touring this august dates will be posted very soon.

PUNKS BEFORE PROFITS started in 1999 as a zine that came out every few months. About a year into that the label was born. The goal then and the goal now is still the same. I put out records that i want to own, and think should be heard. This label gives me the forum to help great DIY hardcore punk bands. I want nothing to do with the professional side of music i just put out records that need to be heard and enjoyed. This is just an expensive hobby that i love. The best part of this music scene is that we do it for the passion and energy we get from it. It’s up to you to keep it alive and keep supporting this movement. Keep it honest keep it energetic and keep it alive. STAY PUNK STAY PIST!!!!

RAMMING SPEED from Boston is recording a brand new record this month and P.B.P. will be putting that out for there Euro tour that starts May 26th. STATE is going to be recording a new record in the month of May also look for that this summer on P.B.P. INSULTS 7″ OUT NOW

So after a long wait and some delay the INSULTS 7″ has seen the light of day. The BORN WIHTOUT A FACE lp is still on hold. After that mistake i took the time to rack down all the right people that did this record back in 85 so i glad to say this is not a boot. Also they have 10 more songs from the same recording session that i hope will become the 2nd INSULTS 7″.

INSULTS thrasher go home ep

Fast as hell hardcore from spring lake MI. This was recorded in 85 and they only did a hand full of shows. This is total in your face hardcore which borders on the speed of LARM and the punk edge of bands like VERBAL ABUSE. This is one of the top records to come from this time period out of Michigan. The layout is all the same with the same insert all lyrics included.

This is an all MICHIGAN issue. Interviews with STATE/LOCAL CHOAS ZINE which is a zine from the early 80′s and still going/RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS/VIOLENT APATHY/ATTENTION SPAN/ANDREW from VILENTLY IL AND BUNNY SKULLS and more. I also did a flyer art show last year and collected over 700 flyers from the past 30 years of MI punk and hardcore shows so i reprinted some of the classics in this issue. Both of the new PBP records are still on hold and i have no date set yet for when and if they will come out. Some other news is BUNNY SKULLS just recorded a new 18 song 7″ that will come out later this winter. POSITIVE NOISE/SMARTXBOMB are doing a split 7″ out within the next month on COUGHING UP BLOOD records. SMARTXBOMB is some people from the great band F.P.O. A new issue of SLASH AND BURN will be out soon all Michigan issue this time. The winter has been fucking cold in the midwest so I am moving a little slower these days, but some new stuff in the works.

The time has come for these 2 great records to see the light of day. Both these records have been in the works for sometime. Either getting artwork or trying to get in contact with past members it has finally happened. We like to say niether are bootlegs, but not very many of the band members have been asked or found. We one wanted to track them all done, but also wanted both these records to come out. So after talking with some people from the bands and many others we have been told to go for it so we did. If by any chance you are in one of these bands get in touch. Really we feel both these records need to be heard. This is also a 3 part set of west MI classics so here are the 1st two.

BORN WITHOUT A FACE this is the hate 82-86 LP
This band came on the scene in 82 and did 2 demo’s and 2 7″s. They play a a very dark midpaced style of hardcore punk. Deep clear vocals with alot of reverb all over the place. Contians people from NECROS/BIG CHIEF. This is just about everything they ever did. This comes with a little write up from a past drummer, a interview and tons of flyers and other little stuff. This is all put together in a nice gatefold jacket. The 1st two hundred are on red wax and all preorders will get it.

THE INSULTS thrasher go home EP
This is some in your face fast as fuck hardcore from small town Michigan. This was recorded in 85 and shows that LARM/HERSEY style alot that was happening around this time. This is the same layout and artwork as the orginal and all the same song order. This also has the same insert as the orginal. We did only 500 of these so act fast.

Don’t miss out. INSULTS “thrasher go home” e.p. More classic HC from Michigan. This band is up there with the likes of LARM when it comes to fast out of control HC from the mid to late 80′s. We could not find all the members from either band. We did come up with one from each. If you happen to be a part of either band contact us.
